Fellowship Of The Least Coin

The Fellowship of the Least Coin is a project of Australian Church Women. It was the brainchild of an Indian woman – Mrs. Shanti Solomon – and began in 1956.

It is a global movement of Prayer for Peace, Justice and Reconciliation, which has now spread worldwide. The money raised is used to help women help themselves. Grants normally do not exceed $US6,000, they are usually non-recurring and are not for building construction.

Applicants for grants have to have tried to raise funds themselves, so it is not just a handout. Grants have been awarded to first world countries as well as third world countries.

The idea is that every time a woman prays she was to set aside a “least coin” of her currency. It was an encouragement for the women to demonstrate their unity in Christian faith, regardless of their country or economic circumstances. All women were able to participate, irrespective of means.

For me it makes our 5c piece very precious indeed. Each coin has a job to do. Some people throw away their 5c pieces because they don’t buy anything. If you are one of those people, just throw it my way, thank you.

REMEMBER: Anyone can participate by saving up those five-cent coins and giving them to Jan. Ask her for a collection box if you are interested.
