Unexpected
Kindness
Blessed be the Lord; for He has shown me His marvellous
kindness in a desperate plight.
Before leaving Calcutta, we heard that reservations
had been made for us to stay in a missionary home in London. There we would have
to wait ten days for passage on a ship home. It did not disturb us at all when
we arrived at Southampton to hear that there was no available hotel
accommodation in the city. When we reached London, however, we found that the
letter requesting the reservations for us had not been received. “Not a bed to
be had. Everything full up!”
We did not know anyone in the city and it was a cold,
foggy November day. With our two small children, we went to the rooming house
district to try to find a place. At every door we heard “Sorry, sorry!” At
one door, however, a kind-hearted maid looked at the children and said, “Come
in. Every room is taken but you shall have mine.” Not only did we have beds,
but also we were served breakfasts. Then in order that we might have a chance to
see London, the maid offered to care for the children while we went out.
