"For the Lord
is good, This month we celebrate the 73rd anniversary of our
church's opening, which occurred on the weekend of 23-24 February 1929. A
special event in our celebrations will be the unveiling of the Adcock Window in
recognition of the service through this church of The main theme of this Anniversary Newsletter is looking back over the years and remembering - especially people. Even though the anniversary is timed to coincide with the anniversary of the opening of the church building, the church is people, as we have been reminded many times. In this issue Rod McMaster talks about life in the manse 50 years ago; Betty Mills remembers back to August 1929 - just 6 months after the church opened; Don White remembers his mother and father, both great workers for the church over many years; Phil Mills gives us his recollections of the early history of the Boys' Brigade at Canberra Baptist; Helen Stafford talks about the Girls' Brigade; James Carter recalls his experiences in the Sunday School of the 1960s; Roy Henson gives an insight into the wit of our first minister, Dr A. J. Waldock, and Keith Joyce tells us what it was like growing up in a church family, around 30 - 40 years ago. There are some photos to test the memory and some stories from the archives about the people remembered in several of the memorials around the church. Finally, thanks to our Associate Minister we have a number of bloopers from church bulletins for your entertainment. I wish to thank the above contributors for their interesting articles. In addition I would like to thank Christopher Fulker who has provided his considerable expertise on the technical side of design, layout and graphics and also to Clive Collins, for his assistance with scanning some of the photos. There are many stories like those in this issue that are known to a few people around the church. People are always interested in history, so why not write them down and give them to the Quarterly News Editor (Christopher Fulker is taking on the job from the next issue) or give them to me for the church's archival collection. I hope you enjoy reading our special 73rd anniversary issue. Bill Hughes
