CLAIMS OF THE ABORIGINES

Introduction

The following sermon, 'Claims of the Aborigines', was preached by Rev. John Saunders on the 14th October 1838. The sermon and responses are published in the hope that they will assist the churches in the Australian reconciliation process. The church has had an intensive relationship with the Indigenous people of these lands.
This history is sometimes hidden and the churches sometimes repress the memory of this relationship. In any case, the contribution of this sermon is to show that at the earliest stages of church thinking in Australia, firstly, there was an awareness of the suffering of Indigenous people as a result of the colonising process; secondly, it was realised that this suffering was God's business; and thirdly, that the consequence was that churches must raise their voices in protest. Whether this awareness, reflection and action have continued to be a part of Australian church thinking and practice is a serious question.

Several responses have been posted to accompany the sermon. Hopefully they exemplify the historical and theological work that will translate the words and initiatives of Rev. John Saunders into resources for a church committed to a just reconciliation today.

Biographical Resources for John Saunders

John Saunders (1806-1859) was the second Baptist Minister in the colony of NSW, arriving in December 1832 and resigning because of ill health in 1847. He oversaw the building of the first Baptist Chapel in Sydney (Bathurst Street) and the first formally constituted Baptist congregation.

His ministry was remarkable in its breadth. As well as being committed to justice for Indigenous peoples, Saunders campaigned for the abolition of convict transportation and was a major public figure in the temperance movement.
