THE DOERY WINDOW

In memory of Mr George H Doery OBE

President of the Baptist Union of Victoria 1914-15

Mr Doery was a prominent businessman in Melbourne, having started with a haberdashery store in Surrey Hills. He then had a tailoring business at Mitcham and eventually had a property in Flinders Lane, Melbourne, which was the centre of the clothing trade at the time. He and his family were members of the Canterbury Baptist Church in Melbourne. He died on 7 April 1924.

The window was donated by the Doery family and unveiled at the church's official opening on 23 February 1929 by Mr Doery's son, Mr W H Doery of Melbourne.

Mr W H Doery was the person who made the 1929 film of the opening of the church. The film was donated by the Church to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia in 2000 to ensure its preservation for future generations. A video copy of the film is held in the Church's archives.
